Stock illustration: is it worthwhile?

During the latest weeks I’ve been thinking of the possibility of selling my commercial illustrations at stock image shops on the internet. I want to thank to everyone for the hints about interesting sites to sell my work and specially Brenda Johima for her supportive words.
Since I already produce a quantity of commercial digital illustration for my web site design studio, Intuitive Designs, I thought it would be an interesting extra income to sell my work also in these stock sites. The first thing I’ve noticed about these both sites is that they don’t seem to have a lot of traffic. On the other hand, you would only get about $ 0.30 per each sale. I figured out I would need to sell at least 500 copies just to pay my work! Is it really worthwhile?
To be honest, I’m not very happy about the limitations of working in vector work like this. There’s nothing really wrong about working in vectors but when it comes to reduce techniques to make the file compatible with old versions of programs, it can get a little painful. It is possible to make it work, but as an artist I don’t feel this kind of work stands for the real possibilities of expression of my work and I don’t really feel completely comfortable about it.
It is possible that in the future I also think of another way to sell my work on the Internet, which is by selling prints of my work. I have been often asked if there are prints of my illustrations available and I should be thinking of doing something about it. Meanwhile I’m going to keep these illustrations in the shops, maybe add some more, and see what happens before making a decision.

I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you.

@ Chris- Oh thanks! This website is still a Beta version and not being advertised yet -I keep it kind of underground now. I hope to start with the design by March.
By the way, I’ve subscribed to your blog too, my wife and I are always interested in learning about Internet marketing, we are aware of how important it is for our web design studio in many ways.
