Kooky Pet Workshop
‘Pukaniwani’. Pencil drawing by Koldo Barroso, 2009

It’s a great pleasure for me to introduce you to our first collective pet at the Kooky Pet Workshop: Pukaniwani

This funny fellow plays Hawaiian songs on his ukulele and sings all day long to attract exotic hummingbirds who feed from the wax in his ears, which tastes like honey. If you have more information about Pukaniwani please share it with everyone else.

  • This Signed 50 Limited Print is now available at the Store.

This Kooky Pet was created with the following reader’s ideas and suggestions:

  1. Naomi says:

    Oh oh, me first?!

Ok, spikey mohawk, big butt, and a ukulele.

  2. Sarah says:

Webbed feet are a must! :-)

  3. Tzaddi says:

Does something mischievous like creating dustbunnies or plays it’s ukulele in your ear to wake you up.

Has a big ring of fur or feathers around it’s neck, like a super thick feather boa.

This is a fun idea :-)

  4. Amber says:

White with big brown cow-like spots
    A masked and caped bandit
    Wiggles
    Puppy dog eyes
    European stride
    Puritan values

  5. Francisco Valdivia says:

    “The Bululú”

    Big whiskers and big hair
    long enough to make a tie;
    big Iberian nose and ears
all he dressed in clergy way.
One vihuela is in its case,
    and the other played by
    whilst around him it appears
    a Spanish republican fly.

  6. Francisco Valdivia says:

Yes, Koldo, yes, it is a standing portrait. Any way, is the poem good? Do you know what a “bululú” is?

  7. Welcome to all of you to the Kooky Pet Workshop! This is starting to look really fun! Lots of ukeleles, and… you like Glam rock, don’t you?

By the way, in case I didn’t explain myself good enough, I will pick just one idea from each person but you can drop as many as you want. If a particular idea is suggested by one more one person, like whatever happened with the ukelele now, I’ll be obliged to use it. Damn it! Do I know how to draw ukeleles?

  8. Mr. Francisco: That’s not a kooky pet but a portrait of yourself!

  9. No, but I do know Robert Wyatt’s “Nit nit folly bololey”

  10. Francisco Valdivia says:

It’s true. I didn’t noticed, a Wyatt connection is always luxurious, and the merit to him, who invented a word. Me not: a bululú is the name it received the touring act of a single man who knew some poems and plays and songs, and travelled through villages and small towns. When there were two, they formed a “ñaque”. These were some of the names of the different forms of stage troops in the distant days of 1600 in this strange bullskin-like country you know so well. They appear in Agustín de Rojas Villandrando’s “El viaje entretenido” (The pleasant journey), Madrid, 1603.

  11. Colleen says:

His ears are 2/3 the size of his body- and he can gauge humans’ fears though them. This is perfect because when he does make noise, it sounds like singing or humming and calms the human listener.

Unfortunately, his humming also attracts hummingbirds and the poor pet’s large ears are perfect for hummingbird nesting.

  12. Ooh, I’m bringing up the hummingbird so you’ll be obliged to use it…I want to see the nest in the ear!

I would suggest this creature is able to find sad people and make them happy if they just agree to tickle his whiskers.

  13. small body that is slightly decaying and starts to wrinkle up
long blond hair which in contrast looks beautiful
big round forehead and a face that tunnels down to the chin
big black eyes, with a unique sparkle in the middle which connotes youth and tranquility
    :-)

  14. Big ears, hummingbirds, black eyes… I like all this stuff! I’m really surprised by your creativity!

  15. Lori says:

Well, since I played the drums in high school……I have to say a drum

    spider legs

    wild hair

  16. Jacob Naasz says:

    wrinkled skin
    wearing a top hat
    habitually picks its nose
    afraid of the dark
    collects useless knickknacks
    four arms
    Frisbee

  17. Miss Jody says:

    I’m rather fond of

    bucked teeth
    soft things
    whiskers
    tippity tappity claws
    glossy eyes that seem wise
    fluffy things

I look forward to this project! Yay!

  18. Yelena says:

    long, thick fur, very fluffy
    a strong curved beak
big dark eyes, half-covered by fur
big fingers with claws that are perfect to borrow holes in the ground
eats low-hanging berries and digs out tasty roots
doesn’t climb trees because his long fur entangles in small branches and dry twigs, and that irritates him
loves to gaze at the moon (is nocturnal)

  19. Naomi says:

One idea from each person… You have a very tough challenge here!

  20. zoe says:

well, if he’s going to play ukulele, he should have a jazz strut…and really tiny hands (ukulele means “jumping fleas” in hawai’i, where the name comes from, because that’s what the rapid finger-work looks like). or maybe really big hands, for a big stretch, but covered in jumping fleas?
i’m going to throw my weight behind the big ears, too, every good musician should have powerful ears :D

  21. Welcome to the Kooky Pet Worshop, Lori, Jacob, Zoe, Yelena & Jody!

You all seem to like “musical creatures”, you’re like me! If I give it so many instruments it will end up being an one-man band.

And Naomi is right, this is really challenging to me, you’re fab!

  22. RJ says:

You’ve gotta give him a slobbery fleshy snout like an American bulldog, with those long hangy jowels.

  23. Oh, no! I’m not fond of those…

  24. I have decided that I will be picking the ideas to create the new Kooky Pets on Thurdays, so the admission for ideas will be closed afterwards. This way i will have time enough until the following Tuesday to draw the pet.

I a word: tonight at 12 pm the admission office is closed!

  25. Carolyn says:

Love him! Once again your talent is awe inspiring.

  26. zoe says:

ear wax that tastes like honey! what a great idea…
i love him, the color of his fur, and of course his monstrous ears, but i have definitely fallen for his mustache-tie.
i’m going to have to think about who he is, about why his feet are webbed (great coloring again there, by the way)….

    kudos!

  27. Sarah says:

Oh he’s wonderful, so cute I love him! And he got the webbed feet I wanted too, yah! He has webbed feet because he lives in the Hawaiian marshes at Kailua ;-)

  28. Sarah says:

Oh wow, yes little human toes, how cute! Hmmm now to go away and think a little more as to why the toes are there…

  29. zoe says:

ahhhh, what a lucky guy! he lives in the marshes at kailua and hummingbirds eat honey from his ears!

  30. Sarah, he’s got webbed feet but nobody said a thing about toes, so I decided to give him human toes, three on each feet. Don’t ask me why… any ideas?

By the way, I’ve always wanted to go to Kailua.

  31. I was thinking about how he sounds when he sings. Because of his big bucked teeth… he pronounces the ‘s’ as ‘z’ and ‘r’ as ‘d’. The guy “zoundz vedy funny”!

  32. I’m currently preparing the Kooky Pets Book and I’m contacting all of you in order to give you credit for contributing in the creation of this Kooky Pet. There’s a few people whose email address I can’t reach.

Testimonials

Koldo Barroso is a brilliant and very original artist. His uniquely beautiful style of illustration is inspirational. You can feel the joy and fun that runs through all of his work.
We were blessed to have him do the illustration and cover design for our album "Life Stories" and couldn't have been more delighted. I feel his energy and wonderful artwork are as much a part of the album as the music itself, it so captured the mood and meaning of the project.

"I received the package!!! Your talent is awesome! Thank you so much I love them. I have already framed them and have put in a place where my gaze will fall upon them frequently. I’m sure that everyone that visits my studio will also feel the Magical Radiance of your Work. I feel so lucky. I feel like I own a museum piece!

Nadiia Evans
Through Koldo Barroso’s art we see magical characters and are drawn into an enchanted world. His storytelling captures your imagination and heart as he weaves life into each of his drawings. I am in awe of his incredible talent and passion for not only his work but for life.

Erin Hammill
How delightful. Thank you for the all the care and skill you have put into this illustration. I was touched and intrigued by your particular interpretation of "C'est La Vie" to see how you had taken the piece beyond its original form of a study in melancholy.

Peter Sinfield
"It is pure joy to enter the imagination of artist & writer, Koldo Barroso. His is a world of delightfully whimsical and bizarre characters brought to life with sensitivity, skill and humour.

This is creativity at its very best - inventive and poetical, its charm simply magnified upon repeated viewing.
Truly magical."
