“Mesmerizer Magnetism” by Koldo Barroso, 2008
Did you ever wake up in the morning without a clue of whatever you dreamed? Do you wonder why other people tell you about their dreams and you always forget yours?
If that’s the case then you probably had an encounter in your dreams with The Mesmerizer: a sinister creature from the Dreamlands who rips off people’s dreams and erases them from their memory to collect them. He has a big appetite for people’s dreams and no mercy with children, from whom he has ripped of enough dreams to build up one of the largest collections of dreams in the universe. He uses his skills to magnetize humans and possesses an insightful view inside people’s dreams just by looking at their eyes.
This is the second illustration for the story of The Mesmerizer that will be featured in my book in works “Portraits from the Dreamlands”. It is a continuation of the former Mesmerizer image that I did in April this year and was featured in the cover of Graphi Magazine .
During the process of making of this work it has been very inspirational for me to listen to glass harmonica interpretations by Thomas Bloch and Bruno Hoffman as well as the songs “Nine” by Autechre and “Anna Christie” by Tuxedomoon.
The complete story and illustrations of The Mesmerizer will be featured in the book “Portraits from the Dreamlands”.

Thanks Sascha,
If something I have learnt about trying to write your own book is that the only way to do it is just by doing it. Good luck with yours!
These little guys feed from people’s comments, so thanks for the contribution! :)

Mmmm… así que este señor es quien se dedica a robarme los sueños. Será…
Koldo, muy buena versión de tu Mesmerizer. Una ilustración koldobarrosesca “from head to toe”.

So what does he *do* with all these dreams after he’s stolen them?

@ Tara- This is long story… He’s been doing scientific research for hundreds of years, trying to explore the posibilities of storing, merging and switching people’s dreams in order to find a way to use the will power while dreaming.
Why you ask? You think he may stole a dream from you? Oh, I’m so sorry about it…

@ Iban- En una de esas probetas alargadas en donde los almacena pude ver unos personajillos muy británicos y flemáticos. Estaba etiquetada como “Wekshire”. Igual era algo tuyo…

@ Rima- You’re very welcomed at my place :)
Yes, I have to write a few stories about my travelling days sometime, fond memories and also some funny ones. I miss Scottland so much! My wife is American but her ancestors were from near Glasgow and we want to visit their graves sometime.

It such a wonderfully strange story! It really gets my imagination running. Love this picture too, somehow the fact you listened to Autechre makes sense, I picture his movements like that, twisted and clinical. Do you know Marc Hempel’s work? You may have a compatriot in him, he did the art for one of the last story lines for the Sand Man comic book.
There’s not enough room here to argue!

Thanks Eric! It’s funny that you say that because somehow I was thinking the other day that you may like Autechre because of your robots!
I didn’t know about Hempel’s work. To be honest -unlike you- I’m not very much into comics anymore. I like to learn about anything or anybody else though, and I’ve just seen his work is great. In my forthcoming works I’m going to try to get rid a little bit of the cartoonish look, it’s a decision I’ve done lately. Something I will like to talk about with you privately sometime when moving and design work is not taking 99% of my brain!

Hey Sandra! Watch out, you shouldn’t never trust this guy! He is especially dangerous for girls who like to work with papercuts and old lace ;-)
