Help me bring characters to life

May 12th, 2009

It is my great pleasure to invite you to take part of a new illustration and storytelling project on this blog called Koldo’s Character Workshop. It will consist of a series of illustrations and short stories of curious characters that I will be posting every week. Most of the illustrations will be pretty simple pencil drawings because I want to concentrate on the characters and stories rather than technical skills.

What is this project about?

It’s all about knowing you better. For the past year, I’ve been posting some little stories and drawings of characters and I have how realized important, stimulating and inspirational your voice is to my work. I want to continue to bring to life and share with you this world of persistent characters that haunt me day and night and constantly push me to make them visible to your eyes. I really want to keep showcasing this collection of character and let them grow up. I’m sure that, with your help, we will have an idea of which ones will be developed in depth into longer stories and maybe published in books.

What do you gain from collaborating?

  • You’ll take part of monthly giveaways of special signed -hand watercolor- prints of some the favorite illustrations and characters.
  • You will enter giveaways of promotional stuff, like postcards, books and CDs.
  • Your name will be credited as a ‘project collaborator’ whenever any of your ideas & suggestions are published.
  • You might find in the stories and characters familiar, yet anonymous, hints about your persona, such as characteristics, features, etc…
  • You get to help bring unique and mysterious character to life!

How can I be aware of giveaways?

How can you collaborate?

Leaving comments in this blog and:

  • Telling me which characters and stories you find more interesting, you identify with and you’d like to see more developed in a book.
  • Leaving any suggestions on the story plots and characters personalities.
  • Sharing with everyone else any personal experience that makes you feel identified with the characters and stories.
  • Telling me what your kids think about the the children-labeled stories that I post and sharing them with them.
  • Sharing details about this project with other people you know who might enjoy collaborating too.

I’m really excited about starting this project with you and I think your contribution is going to be as important as my work itself! With your collaboration, I’m sure that the most unexpected stories and books will take shape. Please be my guest and take part of this project with me!

Hmmm, twinkle or glow, amorphous or solid, moon soft or sun bright…so many decisions to make! (I wonder if I will need to add an invisibility spell so the Treasure Hunter won’t be able to find them too easily?)
    :D

  13. Welcome angelbunny!
Sue, I know you can do anything ;-)
Deborah, you can be called Myth Chaser by you can’t chase me, ’cause Koldo is not a mythical name but a simple Basque name :)

  14. La Donna says:

I’d like to join in if I may. I realise it hasn’t begun yet, just want to say that up to now, your characters I’ve loved most of all have been the ones with long spindly bits, like the ones with very long legs like rose branches, they were part of an illustration for an album. Also I thought the Homesick Willow was very beautiful!

  17. Hi Jesse, the Maniquin Resurrector, you’re very welcomed here!
I think you refer to the illustration’s that I did for Judy Dyble’s album to be released in July. This project is more about fantastic & impossible creatures and their stories, I’m sure there will be a special one for you ;-)

  18. dollseye says:

‘Maniquin Resurrector’, what a great name! If you could see what I’ve been working on recently it may make your eyes curl ;) (though I’m not sure that the works are ever going to appear on the net, so your eyes are probably safe!).

Yes, I was definitely referring to the illustrations for Judy Dyble’s album, I looked backwards after I left the comment and refound them. I really loved those illustrations.

  19. Bett says:

Through Koldo Barroso’s art we see magical characters and are drawn into an enchanted world. His storytelling captures your imagination and heart as he weaves life into each of his drawings. I am in awe of his incredible talent and passion for not only his work but for life.

"It is pure joy to enter the imagination of artist & writer, Koldo Barroso. His is a world of delightfully whimsical and bizarre characters brought to life with sensitivity, skill and humour.

This is creativity at its very best - inventive and poetical, its charm simply magnified upon repeated viewing.
Truly magical."

Koldo Barroso is a brilliant and very original artist. His uniquely beautiful style of illustration is inspirational. You can feel the joy and fun that runs through all of his work.
We were blessed to have him do the illustration and cover design for our album "Life Stories" and couldn't have been more delighted. I feel his energy and wonderful artwork are as much a part of the album as the music itself, it so captured the mood and meaning of the project.

"I received the package!!! Your talent is awesome! Thank you so much I love them. I have already framed them and have put in a place where my gaze will fall upon them frequently. I’m sure that everyone that visits my studio will also feel the Magical Radiance of your Work. I feel so lucky. I feel like I own a museum piece!

Nadiia Evans
How delightful. Thank you for the all the care and skill you have put into this illustration. I was touched and intrigued by your particular interpretation of "C'est La Vie" to see how you had taken the piece beyond its original form of a study in melancholy.
