‘Fiddlecrabiddle’. Pencil drawing by Koldo Barroso, 2009
Let me introduce you to your new Kooky Pet Workshop: Fiddlecrabiddle
He is a gypsy crab fiddler who serenades with romantic Hungarian songs to the loving couples by the moon light in the beach. Whenever you need him, he will come to play for you, but only if you pay for his services with pearls.
I want to dedicate this drawing to two people who, for saddening circumstances, have been deeply in my heart and in my mind while I was drawing this. Michael Jackson, whose moving memorial I’ve been listening to while I was drawing. Apart from being one of the most influential and notorious artists of our time, Michael always kept alive the child inside and that’s why I feel so much identified with his wonderful music.
The other person is a girl called Eva who was a friend of mine in High School. This morning, while I was drawing this, I got a message from an old High School friend in Spain who I didn’t talk to for about 20 year. He just told me that Eva died some 11 years ago. She was a really optimistic girl with a very good heart, I really have a wonderful memory of her, so this is also to her.

A fiddler crab with water boots and googles because he hates how the sand feels on his “feet” and eyes.
An iridescent shell with little fairy fish constantly working to keep it clean.
Welcome to the Kooky Pet, Amy! It’s great to have a creative artist and designer like you with us!
a wild mess of sea-weedy curls, but red, like lady zakharova’s hair (such a great color
…
If it’s going to be a fiddler crab pet it best have a fiddle to entertain it’s master with… or maybe it’s too concerned with it’s own comfort to worry about such things!
oh fiddlesticks, he’s lost his shell again…. can everyone please advert their eyes, he’s feeling quite shy.
Aiyana – “see through”; pearls; skinny
Carolyn – life preservers, shovels and pails
Have a good weekend, take care.
A super long neck coming out of the shell (if it has one) with a disproportionately small head and large (pointy? droopy?) ears.
nose – upturned and small, and a wide mouth below it
head – almost flows together with the rest of the body, but you can tell by a fancy boa of fancy growth of his skin where it ends and where the body starts
hands… I don’t know, fin-like with tiny talons?
mmm… this is starting to get interesting…
Fiddle-dee dee,
washed out to sea
the ocean, she rolls me away,
from my love on the shore,
that was it, there’s no more
for our love, dear, was not meant to be.
He’s magnificent! I love the way you take all the suggestions and turn them just a touch sideways, so they all fit together unexpectedly.
I just want to say that this one is absolutely fantastic. Thanks for allowing all of us to participate. My deepest sympathies for the loss of your long lost friend, Eva.
Thank you for the kind words, Steven. It’s hard to realize when you know about someone passing away a long time after it happened, so in my mind, my friend was also inside the same beautiful shinny casket as Michael Jackson, and also a little bit in the spirit of this shinny little crab.
Sorry to hear about your friend, Koldo. The crab is really something
I like him!
Your newest has initiated a conversation about “crab parts” so we are off to investigate.
We’re sorry for your sadness.
Take care.
Thank you for the kind words, Yelena.
Are you getting hungry? Don’t eat the gypsy crab!
Thanks for bringing happiness, it does a lot to me.
