Kooky Pet Workshop
‘Favegan’. Pencil drawing by Koldo Barroso, 2009

Ladies & gentlemen: here is your new Kooky Pet Workshop: Favegan

This little pal is always hanging around the tables to eat the vegetables left on plates by the kids who don’t like green food. He’s favorite one is organic lettuce because it makes him green and gets him in a merry mood that allows him to fly upside down all over the place. He always loses his boots during the flight, so he gets grumpy again and comes down to look for more green food.

  • This Signed 50 Limited Print is now available at the Store.

This Kooky Pet was created with the following reader’s ideas and suggestions:

  1. Carolyn says:

These are from Aiyana, who is currently enjoying a holiday.

    wings
    “ginormous”
    only practices kindness
    eats vegetables left on plates

    Mine would be-

    large eyes
    knobby knees

    Can’t wait.

  2. Carolyn! Thank you so much for sending lucky Aiyana’s ideas too! Tell her I’ll put them in a little box with her name on it so they won’t let lost. Your ideas are brilliant, by the way.

I wish more people would bring their children & grandkids to this project like you do! Kids generate a very special energy on the Kooky Pets.

  3. Sarah says:

A little mouse or shrew like nose with twitching whiskers would be nice!

  4. Miss Jody says:

    I second knobby knees!

    Also,
    buttons
    a tool being misused
    ferret like tail
    lives in a bucket
    or maybe
    a droopy belly

  5. sunny says:

When I think of kooky, I think we have to start with a personality trait! This kooky pet has an abnormal mood – he is happy ALL the time and giggly no matter what happens. He is generous in the oddest ways, like giving you something that you don’t even need – handing you a cup and thinking he just made your day.

-He has huge, swollen hands from being curious, and generous.
-His eyes smile but are also blank because he is not totally with it.
-The only places he has fur are on his eyebrows and chest
-he wears a top hat cocked to the side.
-his upper lip is really huge so when he smiles constantly it looks odd.
-crawls on all 4s because he is curious
    -only has a couple teeth
-one eyebrow is cocked up, like someone who is innocently confused.
-has a red something on his back- not fur but something that makes him stand out.
-his knees are extra boney like an old man.

you can tell his body has suffered from him being so cluelessly kind, but he looks so happy! koooooky

  6. Oddfae says:

Needs a really remarkable NOSE to find those leftover vegetables…

  7. Kris says:

kooky has tendrils – red/orange, maybe green/purple stripes of many far reaching tendrils

  8. Just one little clarification:

Since I only pick 1 idea per person, when you second other people’s ideas that’s the only one of yours that will be picked.

  9. Yelena says:

He licks the plate squeaky-clean after he eats veggies from it, so he needs a suitable tongue. Likes to fiddle with humans’ things, especially with those about which he’s clueless. He’s trying to be helpful, really, but humans don’t always appreciate it.

  10. zoe says:

wow, sunny’s really good at this! that’s a pretty complete pet…
maybe he should have a lot of little feet, sort of like a centipede, only they can all be used as hands as well–since he’s crawling around looking for lost things and useful things. so he would be able to walk around close to the ground using only some of his feet, while the other feet serve as hands, holding the treasures. and he would have really deep pockets, too, and one of them would be filled with veggies. i think being kind makes him jolly and fat, like st. nick, and since he always thinks he’s done the right thing, he feels like life is easy and sweet. :)

  11. I like how the things are doing this weeks, seems to me that you are going for a pretty cohesive pet, great!

And… welcome to the new Pet Creators: Kris, Oddfae & Sunny!

  12. Friday says:

Wings — intricate and colorful like a dragonfly that make sweet humming sounds when it’s in flight … maybe he/she hovers next to our ears but when we turn our head we can’t see him/her?

  13. Yelena says:

Oooo, I love zoe’s idea of feet that can serve as hands if needed! And having plenty of those feet-hands :)

  14. Colleen says:

And…he has a little cowlick on the top of his head which gives him the darndest time when he wants to dress up for special occasions!

  15. Nadiiaevans says:

I would like to see some yellow and orange colors there! It is so eye catching on darker background, ummm!

  16. Wonderful! Admission is closed now, so I have material enough for the next Kooky Pet. Thank you all and emember that we have a meeting to see the result next Tuesday!

  17. zoe says:

i love him! he’s my favorite so far–his paunch contrasts wildly with his delicate little wings, and that nose is fantastic. great colors, especially those long hairs at the top of his head :P
and i’m a big fan of the framing of this one, too–it looks like another crazy creature with a beak holding up the sign at top.
ps, i love those fingers, too!

  18. Yelena says:

That’s one great looking pet, and a very low maintenance one too!

  19. Nadiiaevans says:

    WOW! Haw cool is that!

  20. Aiyana and Carolyn says:

Ohhhhhhhh – can we keep him (simultaneous response on sight of this amazing guy)?????

Big eyes with eyelashes no less
“Dads work boots” on all the legs
we could go on and on……

You have done it again :0)

  21. zoe says:

shouldn’t they be pea-hives? whenever he gets nervous–for example, when he’s seen by an adult–he loses track of all his feet and feels like he might slip and fall, just like when there are peas around. so he immediately breaks out in itchy pea-hives.
this image is a photo, taken by an adult who had been laying in wait to capture his likeness for an encyclopedia of such creatures being written to remind adults of the things they used to know as children. that’s why his eye is so dilated, it’s from the flash; it’s also why he’s covered in pea-hives. :)

  22. He only eats organic vegetables. All of them but peas because all of the time his feet step on them and roll until he falls upside down, then he can’t get up.

What do you think of the spots on his skin? What may cause it?

  23. Friday says:

Awww, loving Zoe’s explanations as much as Favegan. This is why I’m here … to recapture the imagination of a mind less stress-filled. Thanks to both of you! Favegan is absolutely my FAVE.

"It is pure joy to enter the imagination of artist & writer, Koldo Barroso. His is a world of delightfully whimsical and bizarre characters brought to life with sensitivity, skill and humour.

This is creativity at its very best - inventive and poetical, its charm simply magnified upon repeated viewing.
Truly magical."

Koldo Barroso is a brilliant and very original artist. His uniquely beautiful style of illustration is inspirational. You can feel the joy and fun that runs through all of his work.
We were blessed to have him do the illustration and cover design for our album "Life Stories" and couldn't have been more delighted. I feel his energy and wonderful artwork are as much a part of the album as the music itself, it so captured the mood and meaning of the project.

Through Koldo Barroso’s art we see magical characters and are drawn into an enchanted world. His storytelling captures your imagination and heart as he weaves life into each of his drawings. I am in awe of his incredible talent and passion for not only his work but for life.

Erin Hammill
How delightful. Thank you for the all the care and skill you have put into this illustration. I was touched and intrigued by your particular interpretation of "C'est La Vie" to see how you had taken the piece beyond its original form of a study in melancholy.

Peter Sinfield
"I received the package!!! Your talent is awesome! Thank you so much I love them. I have already framed them and have put in a place where my gaze will fall upon them frequently. I’m sure that everyone that visits my studio will also feel the Magical Radiance of your Work. I feel so lucky. I feel like I own a museum piece!
