“Bandoleros” by Koldo Barroso
“Bandoleros” is the title of my latest illustration, a pencil drawing that has been finished digitally with ink effects. This work has been inspired by the mountains where I live now, in a small village in the North of Madrid called Soto del Real. Naomi and I spend every weekend walking and hiking in the mountains and woods and sometimes we go to this area in the rocky mountains called La Pedriza. This is a very popular place where lots of people go from all over the country for hiking.
The reason why I picked the rocky mountains of La Pedriza is because of the local legends surrounding the place. These mountains were inhabited by famous bandits -bandoleros- in the 18th century who would escape from Madrid when in danger and have their hidden dens amongst the rocks. There are many the stories related to the bandits who lived in these mountains in those days. The most well-known ones were related to Luis Candelas, a famous bandit who ended his days in 1834 executed in the “garrote vil” -an Spanish invention to kill people-. The character of Luis Candelas is one of the most interesting ones I’ve read about because, apart from being a famous bandit, he managed to deal with people from the aristocracy in Madrid and he even had an affair with one of the lovers of the king Fernando VII and -just like the Mexican character El Zorro or Robin Hood- became a local hero.
Other popular bandits who lived in these mountains were Paco “El Sastre” and Mariano Balseiro. In the 70′s, a very popular Spanish TV show about bandits called “Curro Jimenez” was shot in La Pedriza. For a while, some friends of mine used to find wasted rolls of film from the movie in the mountains. Not a very clean thing to do from the production company!
This illustration is not related any specific character or event related to the bandits in La Pedriza. I have just put a lot of stories together and gotten my own profile of the bandits, putting up a scene where they are looking from the mountains for guards coming from Madrid. In the picture you can actually see Madrid in the background, as it would appear around 1840. Today this view is very different and what you can see is the three sky scrapers that have been built in these last few years.
During the process of doing this drawing, I’ve been scanning the different stages, each one related to the use of different pencils starting with B-8 for the lines and darker shades and ending up with HB pencil for the lighter parts. As I said before, I covered some background spots, including the sky, with digital ink painting to reinforce the contrast between the different parts of the illustration.

This drawing is part of a new series of illustration that I’m doing based in pencil drawing, trying to consolidate an alternative to the painting illustrations, which usually take so much longer to be finished. I am already working in a new one featuring a witch. Let´s see what comes of it…

En cuanto a esta imagen me uno a Jacobo. También me gusta más la penúltima con el fondo blanco. Saludos.
Jacobo, es lo que tiene lo de mostrar los sketches, pero tomo nota y guardo tus palabra en la cajita de “gustos y preferencias”
Pues sí que es bueno el dibujo de estos aguerridos bandoleros de pelo en pecho. No podían faltar la navaja y el trabuco en un par de bandoleros que se precien de serlo. Y otro aplauso por mostrarnos los entresijos del proceso. Me encanta que tus dibujos nunca sean “simples dibujos” y que siempre haya tanto tras ellos.
Yo no quiero ser menos que mis compañeros visitantes, y voto por una solución intermedia. Creo que haría que los personajes destacasen más y daría una impresión de un día de calor bochornoso que le va muy bien a la ambientación. Humilde opinión, por supuesto.

Muchisimas gracias por la apreciación y por pasarte por ésta mi casa. Cuando dices “tú página” supongo que te refieres a ésta “web”.
Con el lápiz me lo paso bien, no me considero un gran dibujante pero me gusta el lápiz como medio y éste tipo de ilustraciones me vienen muy bien para el portafolio porque son en blanco y negro.

@ Iban- Gracias majete. Es curioso lo que dices porque esa era mi idea original, lo del cielo bochornoso, se ve que al final se me fue la mano con las tintas. Lo que pasa es que al meter el fondo de tintas gris los personajes destacan menos, como tú bien dices, por eso es posible que a casi todos les guste más en blanco. Esto estuvimos discutiéndolo Naomi -que tiene un ojo increile para éstas cosas- y yo cuando lo estaba terminando y yo erre que erre y subí los grises un poco más. Vamos a ver que pasa si doy un paso atrás…
LECCIÓN DE HUMILDAD
…la que me habéis dado los cuatro (Naomi, Cesar, Jacobo e Iban). Vale, lo he cambiado, teníais todos razón. Vosotros os quedáis con la que os gusta y yo me quedo con la lección: lo que pasa es que tenía miedo a que no se notara que puedo hacer un fondo muy bonito y quería demostrar que podía hacer algo con tintas que se integrara con el resto del dibujo. Acabé dándole más importancia a éste hecho que a dejar el dibujo como en realidad le corresponde y puse mi ego por encima del arte.
Lección aprendida: hacer las cosas por miedo siempre te lleva a donde no quieres ni necesitas ir. Gracias

i bandoleros sono fenomenali….me gusta mucho ;P la loro struttura ed il fatto che ti piace rompere i canoni della realtà.

I love the legends from bandoleros in the area where we used to live in Spain. It’s funny because now you’re making me remember how I used to feel when I did these old works in Spain.
My wife and I are specially attached to this piece for two reasons. 1st because it brings us memories of the mountains in Spain where we used to hike in the weekends. 2nd because it was when making this drawing that I embraced my long lost love for pencil drawing, after a period of working too much on the computer. It was revelation! And I ended up drawing back “como siempre”
