Kooky Pet Workshop
‘Alexbagex’. Pencil drawing by Koldo Barroso, 2009

It’s a pleasure to introduce you to your new Kooky Pet Workshop: Alexbagex

He is a really nice fellow with a golden heart who wanders around picking up the dolls and stuffed animals that people abandon in the streets. He carries them in the numerous bags and pockets that he’s got in his body and repairs them one by one. Then, he looks for a nice home for the dolls, a place where a sad children is in need of a friendly toy, and makes them both happy!

For this drawing, I took the liberty to pay a little tribute to my new born nephew, Alex, who was born in Madrid yesterday. He may become good friends with Alexbagex although he doesn’t need a repaired toy. So this one is dedicated to Alex.

  1. zoe says:

i would love to see a particular kind of boombakamboomker that hangs out in the subterranean train stations of dreams (where the drumming rhythm can come from the wheels on the tracks)–which are the proper crossroads for finding imagined, desperately-dreamed-for things, because the trains (of course) come from many worlds and times.
    :D

  2. Sarah says:

Comforts the forgotten dolls and teddy bears children leave behind when they grow up, therefore must have big chubby arms to provide lots of hugs :-)

  3. zoe says:

    oh! i’m so sad!
i didn’t think how insulting that might be, i feel terrible.

  4. Oddfae says:

    Roly-poly and fuzzy!

  5. Zoe, I don’t want to upset you but Boombakaboomker is a spirit of the dreamlands, not a pet. It’s not possible to do what you say. Why don’t you try to suggest something that you especially like from Boombakaboombers to create a pet, that would work!

  6. Don’t be sad, a boombakaboomker never feels insulted, he has left his ego behind.

  7. Naomi says:

I’d like to see one with hair so long, it can’t see where it’s going.

And it likes to wear striped socks that go up past it’s knees to keep it’s legs warm.

  8. zoe says:

maybe the legs could be really, really long to emphasize those striped socks, which i hope would be black and white, and to help him stretch up to find those abandoned dolls and teddy bears that were stuffed in attics or way back on the top shelf of closets :)

  9. steven says:

I would like to see a frog shaped creature with bark like skin and tethered to the ground to keep from floating away. :)

  10. Sarah Camp says:

A “mohawk” of 6 horns, all different shapes, curls, and colors.

  11. Pat Graham says:

As in some of my dolls I would like to see two different size eyes. One big pupil, one small.
I love the striped (black of course!) stockings. Bells on the end of them.

I like a whiff of straight hair standing straight up.

Reading glasses around his/her neck to read the small print on the dolls and teddy bears to see where there were made or even possibly there’s a name of the child so he/she can return it.

How Fun Bodo! I love this idea!
    Pattee

  12. Pat Graham says:

LOL Whoops…. I left out the K and the L….
I haven’t hardly had any sleep … I just got home from Montana where I also broke my tailbone … Ouch!
    Pattee : )

  13. Aiyana and Carolyn says:

how about a large soft bag to carry the dolls and bears in
    perhaps purple

thanks for letting us play :0)

  14. Nisanne says:

hm, regarding the bag…hm, maybe a living bag,no? like a giant rat with several, different sized pockets or pouches in its fur, closed with sippers and buttons, a rat-bag, so to speak.
Or a how about a lint-mouse? everybody has one in his/her pocket, sometimes, or elsewhere ;-) A fluffy, cuddly little thing, with tiny grey eyes, a fair woolen body and little black hands and feet?

  15. Miss Jody says:

    Tiny little ears
    Spiral-y hairs
    or maybe
peely lips that have been chewed on a bit

  16. Yelena says:

Furry, with a white or light-colored mane and big fluffy hands.

  17. Nico Lund says:

    ideas:

Wide eyed, wondering, or pondering things,
Unruly hair, and a tail and some wings,
Shoes are too big, head is too wide,
    There’s a friend in a pocket,trying to hide.
It looks as though this creature is tricky,
But not wicked or foul, or dirty or icky,
When we see it, we smile and sigh,
And wonder ourselves if there’s magic inside.

  18. zoe says:

wow, nico!! that’s awesome! can the unruly hair have corkscrews?

  19. Hi Nico, I’m sorry but the admission for this Kooky Pet ended Thursday night. The drawing for this one is already done and it will be posted later today. Then, a new admission for next week will start again, so you will be able to post your suggestions Thanks for your contribution.

  20. Pat Graham says:

    Where is the Kooky pet?

  21. Janae says:

I think this is my favorite pet so far, both in look and concept. I love the idea of a pet that fixes broken dolls and then takes them to children who need them.

  22. Zoe had such a great idea! And all this baggy thing from Nisanne, Aiyana & Carolyn was really exciting! I love all the stuff you pulled out last week, the more I do this the funner it gets!

  23. Oddfae says:

You’ve done it again, my friend!! Fantastic!

  24. zoe says:

oh! he’s fantastic! i love him, he’s my new favorite…they get better and better each time.
    vote, guys!!! :)

  25. Steven says:

I love it. i love what collaboration can do. I preach it at work all the time. Oh, congrats on the new born Alex! Maybe one day you can have a stuffed Alexbagex created for him.

  26. zoe says:

oh, i’m sorry, i meant to congratulate you, too! :)
    good tidings to alex!

  27. Aiyana and Carolyn says:

Love it !!! As we read your description we have to admit to a tear starting to form – we are push overs for anyone that brings a bit of love and/or a smile to children. The more we admired Alexbager, the more we smiled. Thank you for being you.

  28. Aiyana and Carolyn says:

Ok – we were looking a little closer and discovered the toe sticking out of his stocking. So busy mending and repairing for others, Alexbagex (sorry for the typo in earlier post – Nana didn’t check it carefully) has no time for himself.

  29. You made me work hard this time with so many dolls & stuffed animals. Let’s see what happens next week but I’m starting to think you guys are as crazy as I am!

  30. cyn says:

    new to this…needs a blankie

  31. Just wanted to say thanks to all the people who made a “best seller” of Alexbagex. I’m so happy that he is now hanging on your walls!

Testimonials

Koldo Barroso is a brilliant and very original artist. His uniquely beautiful style of illustration is inspirational. You can feel the joy and fun that runs through all of his work.
We were blessed to have him do the illustration and cover design for our album "Life Stories" and couldn't have been more delighted. I feel his energy and wonderful artwork are as much a part of the album as the music itself, it so captured the mood and meaning of the project.

Kimara Sajn
"It is pure joy to enter the imagination of artist & writer, Koldo Barroso. His is a world of delightfully whimsical and bizarre characters brought to life with sensitivity, skill and humour.

This is creativity at its very best - inventive and poetical, its charm simply magnified upon repeated viewing.
Truly magical."

Lorell Lehman
How delightful. Thank you for the all the care and skill you have put into this illustration. I was touched and intrigued by your particular interpretation of "C'est La Vie" to see how you had taken the piece beyond its original form of a study in melancholy.

Peter Sinfield
Through Koldo Barroso’s art we see magical characters and are drawn into an enchanted world. His storytelling captures your imagination and heart as he weaves life into each of his drawings. I am in awe of his incredible talent and passion for not only his work but for life.

Erin Hammill
"I received the package!!! Your talent is awesome! Thank you so much I love them. I have already framed them and have put in a place where my gaze will fall upon them frequently. I’m sure that everyone that visits my studio will also feel the Magical Radiance of your Work. I feel so lucky. I feel like I own a museum piece!
