I was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1967 and besides my work at Intuitive Designs, I work as a freelance illustrator specialised in whimsical and children’s illustration and magic reality. I also work on several personal projects related to editorial work, children’s books, album covers, and sculpting.
I started working in a professional design studio in Madrid in 1987. In 2002, I started my own design studio with my wife Naomi after several years of freelance work in different activities such as illustration, design, painting, sculpting and craftsmanship.
I had my first art classes and learned classic painting techniques at 6. As a kid, I was fascinated by the cartoon world of Walt Disney, Hannah Barbera and Warner Bros. I later developed a passion for comics and I spent most of my childhood at home drawing my own comics and cartoon characters.
It was during my teenage years that I discovered the amazing world of illustrators such as Brian Froud, Roger Dean and Patrick Woodroffe. I realized there was a marvelous way to put my own stories, ideas, images and visions in books and I decided to become an illustrator. This also led me to the marvelous work of classical illustrators such as Edmund Dulac, Arthur Rackham, John Bauer, Kay Nielsen and Einar Norelius.
During the late 80’s, I started building my first illustration portfolio and held my first exhibition. Around this time I also attended courses for Children’s Literature and Imagination in Madrid with Spanish authors Federico Martín Nebras and Joan Manuel Gisbert.
By 1987, I started working in a professional graphic design studio in Madrid. I consider myself a an illustrator and designer from the “old school” who adapted to the new times and technologies. I am one of these people who dropped tools such as Rotring pens, photolitographs and aircrafts to enter the digital world with amazement. I am very happy to have learned how to work first with my hands before getting a computer. Today, I still use some of the old techniques in certain circumstances though and I always try to apply to the new digital possibilities all that I learned in the old days.
During the late 80’s, I also took drawing lessons with Gerardo Aparicio and learned engraving at the workshop of Manolo Ayllón. Apart from professional graphic design, I have done other creative activities including craftsmanship, sculpture, painting, engraving and also theater lighting.
In 1997, after having moved to London for one long and rainy year, I returned to Spain and learned how to use the digital technologies and started doing design and development for several web projects which included logo design and illustration. I found some of the possibilities of digital technology extremely interesting in terms of experimentation and I learned to adapt the old painting and drawing techniques to computer work, which later led me to start Intuitive Designs with my wife Naomi.
Some of my latest personal projects are a book of characters related with the dreamtime realities, children’s illustration book on monsters, a book that compiles a series of illustrations of songs and lyrics by different artists (including Jon Anderson, Robert Wyatt, Pete Sinfield, Björk, Roger Hodgson and Peter Gabriel), and sleeve design for album covers.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing music. To be able to work in a quiet environment and to listen to music at the same time is something I always wanted to be able to do in my life and I am very grateful to life for making that possible. Music has alway been one the most influential sources in my life and artwork. Illustrating music and lyrics has alway been a passion for me and I’m always enthusiastic about getting involved in illustrating music projects. I have also been involved in music projects as a musician: playing Irish harp, keyboards, and vocals in different projects of traditional, experimental and electronic music and recorded a solo album “Open” in 1997.
I love to have long walks in the countryside with my wife and get inspiration from nature. I’m mostly inspired by the woodlands, mountains and rivers, animals, as well as music, literature, photography, and even fashion. I guess my art could be described as “magic realism”: a world where different realities from different dimensions live together. Shadows and light is the conceptual motto of my work. The meeting point between both of them creates a mysterious contradiction that has always fascinated me.
I am very interested in the personal awareness of the spiritual world today, as well as the power of will and positive thinking. I believe love is the ultimate force that makes the world go round and I think everything is possible if we learn how to be in tune with it. I try to reflect this in all of my work. My main motivation for doing artwork is to realize every day that everyone of us is an unique living being in the world and to leave our footprint is to perpetuate the source of everything that is. I feel very grateful for having this opportunity to express my own world throughout art and music and to take part of this beautiful experiment and school of life.
